The Value of Statistics: Guest Blog Post by Brian Kelly

Posted by Frank Manista on 13th February 2012

This guest blog post is written by Brian Kelly. Brian works for the JISC-funded Innovation Support Centre (ISC) at UKOLN, University of Bath. Brian is a prolific blogger on the UK Web Focus blog and last year was runner-up in the Computer Weekly annual Social Media awards in the IT Professional Blogger of the Year category. Brian is also a member of the Jorum Steering Group.

What could statistics about the Jorum service tell us (and by 'us' I mean not only the Jorum team and JISC, who fund Jorum, but also users - and even non-users - of the service)? I recently read an article entitled "Zeitgeist 2011 - Trends for presentations" published in Slideshare's newsletter and realised that...

FAQ: Why Would I Use Jorum?

Posted by Frank Manista on 7th February 2012

Back in 2009/2010, Jorum’s offering was reviewed externally, and the question that is the basis of this blog post was posed within that unpublished document. It is an important one to ponder, given now that Jorum is hoping to move into service and "become a real boy", as it were. As our Jorum Final Report pointed out, when we first came on the scene, we were something new: no one had heard of a national repository before, and no one really had any idea of what we were supposed to look like or indeed work like. Since then, the examples of repositories, and particularly Open Repositories, have multiplied, with exemplars such as Humbox, OpenMichigan, UNOW and Swapbox, as just a few who...

The Jorum Development Plan (February - April 2012)

Posted by Laura Shaw on 2nd February 2012

This is an update to the Jorum Development Plan (Oct 2011 - Jan 2012).

Jorum is currently a JISC Service in Development. The Jorum management team is in the process of developing a Business Case in support of Jorum formally becoming part of JISC’s Services Portfolio. For this we need a clear remit and evidence of demand. We will ensure we update the community with any developments, but do not expect to be in a position to do so until June/July 2012. This blog post summarises the community and technical activities we’ll be carrying out over the next three months.

1. Community Activities

1.1 Licensing

We are pleased to announce that we have worked with previous Jorum contributors to...

Stats and Stories: Increase in Resource Viewing and the Jorum Competition

Posted by Frank Manista on 19th January 2012

Back in September, 2011, we held the Jorum Competition, culminating in the winners being announced at the gala dinner at the ALT-C conference. Earlier today, David Kernohan, attending the SCORE conference, asked if there had been any noted knock-on effect from the announcement regarding the competition and the award. The three winners were "Testing the Functional Integrity of Ocular Reflexes", "Citing the Law Tutorial", and "The Virtual Genetics Education Centre".

Using Google Analytics, I found an increase in views of all three resources from the announcement onward, with a spike on the day of the conference in each case. In the case of the winner, there was a doubling of views by...
